The PCRC Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge - Questions and Answers

When is the Welsh 3 Peaks challenge taking place?

The next PCRC Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge will take place over the weekend of Saturday 13th May and Sunday 14th May 2017.

Which Mountains are to be climbed

The Prostate Cancer Research Centre (PCRC) − Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge involves climbing 3 of the most iconic mountains in Wales. The mountains are:-

South Wales Pen Y Fan at 886m / 2907 ft.
Mid Wales Cadair Idris at 893m / 2930 ft.
North Wales Snowdon at 1085m / 3560 ft.

Why has this challenge been organised?

To raise awareness of prostate cancer and to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Research Centre. The Centre is carrying out cutting edge research to improve the survival and quality of life of men suffering from prostate cancer and ultimately to find a cure for prostate cancer

How do I register

You will need to register in advance to take part in the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge and pay a non-refundable registration fee of £45 to cover administration and the costs of staging this charity challenge event. There are 2 ways you can register for this Charity Challenge event:

Is there a limit to the number of people able to take part

For logistical and environmental reasons the maximum number of people taking part in the PCRC Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge will be limited to 150 in total. To ensure that you are one of them it is advisable to register for the event as soon as you can. The web site will say if / when the maximum number has been reached.

How much money will I have to raise

Obviously as much as you can but we are asking all Welsh 3 Peaks participants to aim to raise at least £250 or more.

Sponsorship Forms

Sponsorship forms can be downloaded from the Snowdon 500 web site by selecting "Sponsorship Forms" from the menu. Alternatively you can obtain sponsorship forms by (a) sending an email request To info@snowdon500.co.uk or by telephoning the Snowdon 500 team on 0207 848 7546

How much of the sponsorship funds raised will go directly to prostate cancer research

Your £45 registration fee will help cover the administration and other organisation costs of staging the Snowdon 500 Challenge. It means that 100% of all sponsorship funds raised will go directly to the Charity. but £1 from each registration fee will be donated to the Llanberis Mountain Rescue team who do such a magnificent job 365 days a year helping people in trouble on the mountain whatever the weather.

Who Organises the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge

The Snowdon 500 Challenge is planned, organised and managed by unpaid volunteers working in association with the Prostate Cancer Research Centre. It means that expensive Commercial event organisers are not used in any capacity and ensures that 100% of all sponsorship funds raised by people taking part goes directly to the Charity.

Where is the starting point?

The Challenge starts with an ascent of Pen Y Fan (Brecon Beacon) early on the Saturday and then moves on to mid Wales to Climb Cadair Idris before arriving at Llanberis in North Wales by late Saturday afternoon or early evening ready to tackle Snowdon on the Sunday.

What time should I arrive at the start point?

We recommend an early start (arriving at the foot of Pen Y Fan around 04.30 − 05.30) on Saturday 13th May 2017. This should leave sufficient time to climb Pen Y Fan, drive on to Cadair Idris by mid /late morning and after climbing Cadair Idris reach Llanberis for an overnight stop.

Which mountain paths must be used?

How long will it take?

It´s difficult to be exact because so much depends on levels of fitness and the prevailing weather conditions but as a guide realistic timings would be in the region of:

Pen Y Fan 2.5 hours
Cadair Idris 6 hours
Snowdon 5 hours

In addition you must also allow for driving between each the Peaks which could take (depending on traffic conditions)

Pen Y Fan − Cadair Idris 2.5 hours
Cadair Idris − Llanberis 1.5 hours

You will also need to allow for time needed to reach Pen Y Fan which is about 1 hour´s drive from Cardiff and of course the time needed to travel from where you live to South Wales.

Will there be anyone to help me on route?

Highly experienced Mountain Leaders / safety marshals will be deployed on each of the 3 Peaks to provide support on the mountain and help keep you safe.

We will also have support staff at the foot of each mountain to sign you in and back and who will also provide additional information where required as well as handing out water & chocolate bars.

You will also have access to experienced event organisers who can be contacted by phone or email at any time.

What other support will I receive?

After you have registered and paid your £45 entry fee you will be sent a comprehensive information and Support pack providing guidance and advice to help you plan for the event. The Pack will also include detailed "all weather" laminated maps for each of the Welsh 3 Peaks.

What if I have medical problems?

If you have any medical problems (epilepsy, diabetes, high blood pressure, allergies for example) you should seek medical advice before registering for this event. The registration form for the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge asks you let us know about any medical problems you may have so that we are aware and in case we need to organise assistance on the day.

Can I take part if I am not in a team or do not have a driver

Yes − but If you are attempting to "solo" the Welsh 3 Peaks Challenge without other team members or a separate driver you will have to be prepared to undertake all your own driving duties. This is achievable but not ideal as you will inevitably be tired and weary following your ascent and descent of each of the peaks.

How should the funds I raise be paid to the Prostate Cancer Research Centre?

There are two ways to do this (and you can use one or both of them).

(1) You can also use the Virgin Money Giving web site which also provides an easy to use on-line fundraising facility . For step by step guidelines on setting up your own Virgin Money Giving page click here.

(2) Send a cheque made payable to Prostate Cancer Research Centre for the amount you have raised together with your completed sponsorship forms to:
